Fadhili gas programme, Saudi Arabia

PROJECT SUMMARY

Start Date – 2015
End Date – 2021

Client: Saudi Aramco

Location: 30 km west of Jubail, Saudi Arabia

In 2015, Petrofac was awarded a contract by Saudi Aramco to undertake the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of a sulphur recovery plant as part of their Fadhili gas programme.

Our scope of work includes the construction of six sulphur recovery trains with associated facilities for the sulphur handling, loading, unloading and storage; sour water stripper, flare system and waste water treatment plant.

The Fadhili gas plant is a grassroots gas processing facility with a total capacity of 2,500 MMSCFD. It processes:

  • 2,000 MMSCFD of non-associated gas from the Hasbah offshore fields
  • 500 MMSCFD of non-associated gas from the Khursaniyah onshore fields

The plant consists of five gas processing trains – four of these trains will process Hasbah offshore gas and one train will process Khursaniyah onshore gas.

Meeting the demand for energy

When completed and on stream, the Fadhili gas plant will add five billion SCFD of gas processing capacity to the Kingdom’s domestic energy capacity, enabling a wide range of Saudi industries including steel, aluminium and petrochemicals as well as powering water desalination plants and boosting electricity production.

Setting new environmental standards for Saudi Arabia

The Fadhili gas programme will be unique in several aspects.
Environmentally, it is being designed with a maximum sulphur recovery rate of 99.9% – using a tail gas treatment process and power recovery hydraulic turbine technology in place of conventional control valves to capture the significant pressure drop in the gas processing trains to generate energy.

It will include a cogeneration plant with the capacity to produce 1.3 gigawatts of power and 3.2 million pounds per hour of steam.
