Client: Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC)
Project value: US$2.1 billion – a 50/50 joint venture with Daelim Industrial Co Ltd
Location: 230 km north west of Muscat
In 2013, Petrofac was awarded a 36-month engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by ORPIC for the Sohar Refinery Improvement Project.
Valued at US$2.1 billion, the contract is a 50/50 joint venture with Korean based Daelim Industrial Co Ltd and is one of the largest oil and gas EPC deals ever awarded in Oman.
Located 230 km north west of Muscat, the scope of work at the refinery includes engineering, procurement, construction, start-up and commissioning services. The contract includes improvements at the existing facility as well as the addition of new refining units.
The refinery was originally constructed and commissioned in 2006 and ORPIC is now investing in improvements at the site to enhance the current production capacity.
When complete, it’s anticipated that the revamped facility will increase current output by more than 70% – from just over 115,000 barrels per stream day to more than 185,000 barrels per stream day.
Project update: safety milestone
In January 2017, the project celebrated 50 million man-hours LTI-free. The achievement reflects ORPIC’s core value of putting safety and the environment first – the safety of its people, plant, environment and operations.
