In 2014, Petrofac was awarded an EPC contract for Kuwait National Petroleum Company’s (KNPC) Clean Fuels Project at the Mina Abdulla refinery in Southern Kuwait.
Petrofac is leading a joint venture with Samsung Engineering Co Ltd and CB&I Nederland BV. The project is worth US$3.7 billion, of which Petrofac’s share is US$1.7 billion.
The lump-sum engineering, procurement and construction scope of work includes the provision of 19 new refining units at Mina Abdulla, the revamping of five existing units at the Shouaiba refinery site and the accompanying inter-refinery transfer lines.
The Clean Fuels Project is one of KNPC’s major investment projects to upgrade the Mina Abdulla and Mina Al Ahmadi refineries, in order to reach a daily production target of around 800,000 barrels of oil per day.
Safety first
Safety is a top priority on the project. It’s a challenging site, with many old units with elaborate systems. The project will require a large workforce of around 14,000, with employees speaking a variety of languages. Petrofac is committed to creating a focused safety culture at the site and is putting in place a robust HSE team with a motto of ‘safety first’.
